DTC Troubleshooting: 22, 23

DTC: 22  Vehicle Speed Sensor Signal
  
  


NOTE:

1.Start the engine and check the tachometer.

Is the tachometer working correctly?


YES - Go to 2.


NO - Go to 12.


2.Test-drive the vehicle above 3 mph (5 km/h).

Is the speedometer working correctly?


YES - Go to 3.


NO - Perform the speedometer system troubleshooting.n

3.Turn the ignition switch OFF.

4.Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

5.Disconnect the VSS 3P connector and EPS control unit connector B (14P).

6.Check for continuity between the EPS control unit connector B (14P) terminal No. 4 and body ground.

 

Is there continuity?


YES - Repair short to body ground in the wire between the  VSS and  EPS control unit.n


NO - Go to 7.


7.Connect the VSS 3P connector (PGM-FI ECM/PCM connector E (31P))*.

8.Block the rear wheels and raise the vehicle, and make sure it is securely supported.

9.Reconnect the negative cable to the battery.

10.Turn the ignition switch ON (II).

11.Block the right front wheel, and slowly rotate the left front wheel, and measure the voltage between the EPS control unit connector B (14P) terminal No. 4 and body ground.

 

Does the voltage pulse 0 V and 5 V?


YES - Check for loose EPS control unit connectors. If necessary, substitute a known-good  EPS control unit and recheck.n


NO - Repair open or short to body ground in the wire between the  EPS control unit and  VSSor faulty the VSS.n


12.Turn the ignition switch OFF.

13.Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

14.Disconnect the EPS control unit connector B (14P).

15.Reconnect the negative cable to the battery.

16.Start the engine.

17.Measure the voltage between the EPS control unit connector B (14P) terminal No.5 and body ground.

 

Is there about 0 V to battery voltage?


YES - Check for loose EPS control unit connectors. If necessary, substitute a known-good  EPS control unit and recheck.n


NO - Go to 18.

18.Turn the ignition switch OFF.

19.Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

20.Disconnect the PGM-FI ECM/PCM connector E (31P).

21.Connect the PGM-FI ECM/PCM connector terminal E26 and body ground with a jumper wire.

 

22.Check for continuity between the EPS control unit connector B (14P) terminal No.5 and body ground.

 

Is there continuity?


YES - Go to 23.


NO - Repair open in the wire between the  EPS control unit and PGM-FI ECM/PCM.n


23.Disconnect the gauge assembly 30P connector.

24.Check for continuity between the EPS control unit connector B (14P) terminal No.5 and body ground.

 

Is there continuity?


YES - Repair short to body ground in the wire between the  EPS control unit and PGM-FI ECM/PCM.n


NO - Check for loose EPS control unit connectors. If necessary, substitute a known-good  EPS control unit and recheck.n
