DTC P0500:  VSS Circuit Malfunction

1.Test-drive the vehicle.

2.Check the vehicle speed with the HDS.

Is the correct speed indicated?

YES - Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the VSS and the ECM.n

NO - Go to 3.

3.Turn the ignition switch OFF, and wait 10 seconds.

4.Connect the ECM test harness and the test pin box between the ECM and connector.

5.Block the rear wheels, and set the parking brake.

6.Raise the front of vehicle, and make sure it is securely supported.

7.Turn the ignition switch ON (II).

8.Block the right front wheel, and slowly rotate the left front wheel.

9.Measure voltage between test pin box terminals No. 71 and No. 73.

Is the pulse voltage between 0 V and 5 V or battery voltage indicated?

YES - Go to 33.

NO - Go to 10.

10.Turn the ignition switch OFF, and wait 10 seconds.

11.Disconnect the ECM test harness from the ECM and connector.

12.Turn the ignition switch ON (II).

13.Block the right front wheel, and slowly rotate the left front wheel.

14.Measure voltage between test pin box terminals No. 71 and No. 73.

Is the pulse voltage between 0 V and 5 V or battery voltage indicated?

YES - Go to 33.

NO - Go to 15.

15.Turn the ignition switch OFF.

16.Disconnect the VSS 3P connector.

17.Turn the ignition switch ON (II).

18.Measure voltage between VSS 3P connector terminal No. 2 and body ground.

Is there battery voltage?

YES - Go to 19.

NO - Repair open in the wire between the No. 3 (7.5 A) fuse and the VSS, then go to 26.

19.Check for continuity between test pin box terminal No. 73 and body ground.

Is there continuity?

YES - Repair short in the wire between the ECM connector No. 3 terminal No. 44 (test pin box terminal No. 73) and the VSS, then go to 26.

NO - Go to 20.

20.Connect VSS 3P connector terminal No. 3 to body ground with a jumper wire.

21.Check for continuity between test pin box terminal No. 73 and body ground.

Is there continuity?

YES - Go to 22.

NO - Repair open in the wire between the ECM connector No. 3 terminal No. 44 (test pin box terminal No. 73) and the VSS, then go to 26.

22.Connect VSS 3P connector terminal No. 1 to body ground with a jumper wire.

23.Check for continuity between test pin box terminal No. 73 and body ground.

Is there continuity?

YES - Go to 24.

NO - Repair open in the wire between the ECM connector No. 3 terminal No. 42 (test pin box terminal No. 71) and the VSS, then go to 26.

24.Turn the ignition switch OFF.

25.Replace the VSS.

26.Reconnect all connectors.

27.Turn the ignition switch ON (II).

28.Reset the ECM with the HDS.

29.Do the ETCS learn procedure.

30.Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3,000 rpm (min-1) without load (in neutral) until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle.

31.Test-drive under following conditions:
  • Engine coolant temperature above 70 °C (158 °F)
  • Transmission in 4th gear
  • Engine speed between 1,600 rpm (min-1) and 3,500 rpm (min-1)
  • During the drive, decelerate (with the throttle fully closed) for 5 seconds, and repeat that 5 times

32.Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs in the DTCs MENU with the HDS.

Are any Temporary DTCs or DTCs indicated?

YES - If DTC P0500 is indicated, check for poor connections or loose terminals at the VSS and the ECM, then go to 1. If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting.

NO - Troubleshooting is complete.n

33.Substitute a known-good ECM.

34.Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3,000 rpm (min-1) without load (in neutral) until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle.

35.Test-drive under following conditions:
  • Engine coolant temperature above 70 °C (158 °F)
  • Transmission in 4th gear
  • Engine speed between 1,600 rpm (min-1) and 3,500 rpm (min-1)
  • During the drive, decelerate (with the throttle fully closed) for 5 seconds, and repeat that 5 times

36.Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs in the DTCs MENU with the HDS.

NO - Replace the original ECM.n
